| Known for his wood engravings as well as illustration, Joseph Adams was born at New Germantown, New Jersey and moving to New York City, was apprenticed to a printer for a short period of time. He taught himself wood engraving and did that as well as illustration, working in the city until 1847.
His best known work was the set of 1,600 illustrations for Harpers' illustrated Bible.
