This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Mendota, Illinois, Mary Allen became a well-known portrait artist in Washington state, especially during the 1920s and 1930s. Among her subjects were Ezra Meeker, pioneer, and Narcissa Whitman, missionary, and she painted in both oil and watercolor.

She also painted Indian subjects, scenes of the early northwest lumber industry, coastal views, and the California desert, which she visited often. She was also a sculptor in clay of Indian figures but was not particularly known for this endeavor.

Mary grew up in Springfield, Illinois, and in 1886 went to Washington state with her brother, staying in Seattle. She returned to Illinois and married physician Orville Reid Allen, and they settled in Stanwood, Washington in 1897. From that time, excepting a year in California, 1911, she was a resident of Snohimish County.

She showed early art talent and studied with Anna Althea Hills in Laguna Beach, California and Michael Jacobs at the Metropolitan Art School in New York. She also took sculpture from Dudley Pratt in Seattle.

She was a member of the Women Painters of Washington, the Laguna Beach Art Association, and Pacific Coast Painters, Sculptors, and Writers. Her work can be found at Whitman College.
