Born in Mendota, Illinois, Mary Allen became a well-known portrait artist in Washington state, especially during the 1920s and 1930s. Among her subjects were Ezra Meeker, pioneer, and Narcissa Whitman, missionary, and she painted in both oil and watercolor.
She also painted Indian subjects, scenes of the early northwest lumber industry, coastal views, and the California desert, which she visited often. She was also a sculptor in clay of Indian figures but was not particularly known for t (showing 500 of 2057 characters). |
