A genre, landscape and portrait painter, Sophie Anderson was born in Paris, France and studied briefly there in 1843 with Alexandre Joseph Steuben. She may also have studied with her father, Charles A.C. Gengembre, a well-known French architect
She came to America with her parents in 1849. The family first settled in Cincinnati where she painted portraits of prominent persons and did illustrations for Henry Howe's book "Historical Collections of the Great West" (1851). Several years late (showing 500 of 1455 characters). |
