| Born in Northumberland, England in February 1818. Armstrong served an apprenticeship to a London engraver at an early age and provided engravings for the first issues of the Illustrated London News. After a brief period in Paris, the chaos in the aftermath of the French Revolution prompted him to sail to Australia and then on to California in 1849. He was active in Sacramento where he collaborated with Charles Christian Nahl on wood engravings for the local newspaper. He (showing 500 of 1674 characters). |
