This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Northumberland, England in February 1818.  Armstrong served an apprenticeship to a London engraver at an early age and provided engravings for the first issues of the Illustrated London News.  After a brief period in Paris, the chaos in the aftermath of the French Revolution prompted him to sail to Australia and then on to California in 1849.  He was active in Sacramento where he collaborated with Charles Christian Nahl on wood engravings for the local newspaper.  He later settled in San Francisco and continued with Nahl on illustrations for national magazines and started a short-lived newspaper called Illustrated News which he wrote and illustrated with his own drawings.  He was active in San Francisco until his death of lung congestion on Dec. 21, 1860.   In:  Society of California Pioneers (SF Harbor, 1849); Huntington Library (San Marino, CA).
