This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| David Moreland Bates studied at the Art Center College of Design in the 1960s and intended to pursue a career in illustration and fine art. Service in the Navy and work as a photographer and computer programmer kept him from his goal.
In the 1990s he began taking workshops with Kevin Macpherson, John Encinias, Scott Christensen and Matt Smith. Today Bates is a member of the Oil Painters of America and co-founder of the Outdoor Painter Society.
