Elizabeth Gowdy Baker was born in Xenia, Ohio in 1860. Elizabeth Gowdy graduated from Monmouth College and studed art at Cooper Union in New York City, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Cowles Art School in Boston under such masters as William M. Chase and H. Siddons Mowbray.
