One of California's most well-known and celebrated figurative expressionist painters, Joan Brown is recognized among the important artists who emerged from the creative milieu of the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1950s.  Perhaps because of her premature death, recognition of her work as a significant abstract painter of the late 20th century has taken time.
