Born in Los Angeles, he earned a degree in psychology from California State College at Los Angeles.  He then served as an infantryman during the Korean War. He studied at the Art Center School in Los Angeles and at the Chouinard Art Institute.  He transferred to the state college system where he earned a bachelors degree and did post graduate work in psychology, and also completed work for an art major and did post graduate work in art.

John was employed as an artist-designer-illustrator for North American Aviation, Aero Jet General.  He has held Art Director positions with Bates Publications, National Missile, Barnes/Chase Advertising, and the Southland Sunday Magazine.

As John began to devote more time to fine arts, he still maintained a freelance design and illustration studio. His client list included: R.C.A., Pacific Telephone, Packard Bell, Avery Label Co., and WED Enterprises (Disney).

John has exhibited in numerous one-man and juried art shows since the 1960's and garnered numerous awards.  He was the winner of the John R. Graybach Memorial Award/Oil in the 1988 American Artists Professional League (New York) exhibit.  In recent American Indian and Cowboy Artists shows he was the winner of the Eagle Feather Award (artist's artist) for 1989 and 1990, Best of Show in 1992; and winner of the Norris Foundation "Best of Show" award in the Masters of the American West Show at the Autry Museum in 1996.

A number of John's original lithographs were purchased by the Smithsonian Institute as part of their permanent collection.
