This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Newark, New Jersey, he was until 1990, a "Sunday Painter," having devoted most of his professional time to his writing of more than twenty art history books.

He studied painting with Louis Lozowick, a family friend, and Leon Kroll at the National Academy of Design. He earned fine arts degrees from Washington Square College, the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, and Harvard University. From 1946 to 1970, he taught and eventually chaired the art department of Brooklyn College, whose doctoral program in art history he founded. His Impressionist landscapes record his travels to Long Island, Cape Cod, Florida, the Caribbean and Europe.

In 1996, when he was eighty-four years old, the Schlesinger Gallery in New York had his first one-man show composed of twenty watercolors.
