Born in Newark, New Jersey, he was until 1990, a "Sunday Painter," having devoted most of his professional time to his writing of more than twenty art history books.
He studied painting with Louis Lozowick, a family friend, and Leon Kroll at the National Academy of Design. He earned fine arts degrees from Washington Square College, the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, and Harvard University. From 1946 to 1970, he taught and eventually chaired the art department of Brooklyn (showing 500 of 814 characters). |
