This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Santa Fe, NM on Feb. 17, 1866. Bell developed a taste for color at an early age; as an infant he consumed half a tube of Prussian blue. He was the son of a brigadier general and expected to pursue a military career, but his father's close friend James Whistler influenced young Bell to become an artist. He then studied for four years at the PAFA. Bell painted in California in 1895 while maintaining a studio in Denver, CO. In 1914 he settled in Long Beach, CA and was active there and in Laguna Beach in the local art scene until his demise on Feb. 17, 1932. His work includes landscapes and marines. Exh: SFAA, 1895; Denver Art Club, 1895, 1898.
