BACKGROUND
Valerie Beller grew up in San Antonio, Texas, and was always creatively inclined- drawing, studying ballet, singing and playing musical instruments. In her childhood, she traveled internationally on various excursions with her family, and as an adult, spent time in Asia and traveled extensively in Europe. She lived in Spain for nine months and is fluent in Spanish. Currently, she resides in Chicago with her husband and two children.
EDUCATION
In 1987, Valerie Beller received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College, where she studied painting and drawing with Frances Barth, John Newman and Ursula Schneider. While still an undergraduate, she studied painting, printmaking and filmmaking briefly at the San Francisco Art Institute in an intensive summer program. In 1989, Beller moved to Chicago for graduate school at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her graduate painting advisors included Susanna Coffey, Jim Lutes, Susanne Doremus, and Jim Nutt, amongst others. She received her MFA in 1991.
