Landscape, portrait and miniature painter, James Arthur Cleveland was born in Salem, Massachusetts (1811). His father was Captain William Cleveland, James moved from Salem (after 1837) and it is believed that he moved to Ohio, married there and they had a son (c. 1840).
Later he appears as a landscape and miniature painter in Rochester, New York (in 1844 and 1845), but may have been in New York City around 1839.
