Joe Cox was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and received his art education at the John Herron Art School and at the University of Iowa. He taught art at the University of Iowa, Tennessee, Florida, and at North Carolina State University.
He was a painter and a muralist whose modernist works were loose representations of the world around him. He worked in oils, watercolors, and acrylic polymer on both canvas and paper.
