Biography from Gallery C:
North Carolina painter Matt Cooper (b. 1960) is a storyteller, a narrator of the dark side of the human condition. His paintings question a great range of contemporary issues from racism, to isolation, to religious zealousness. In many instances he documents the human dramas that result from abuses of alcohol, drugs and power.

This African-American artist sees with great clarity and paints with deep potency what our society would often rather not see.

Cooper was born in rural North Carolina and spent his high school years in Europe, the son of a career military father. This connection to the rural South combined with wider experiences abroad and in large urban centers has given Cooper the ability to see things from a distinctively unique perspective.

Cooper's artistic style is inspired by his background in journalism, which he studied at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he graduated in 1982. Indeed, his painted docudramas are akin to photojournalism. However, his lush oil surfaces in dissonant color schemes with distorted perspective and proportions offer an other-worldliness to his vision that far surpasses photography.
