|Impressionist William Chadwick focused on portrait and landscape subjects and spent much time at the artists colony at Old Lyme, Connecticut. He had a strong reputation among his colleagues but was not greatly known beyond his own circle.|
He was born in Dewsbury, England, and emigrated to New York City where friends from the Art Students League encouraged him, age 23, to paint at Old Lyme, Connecticut. This experience redirected him from portrait and figure subjects to landscapes, and he spent many future summers at Old Lyme.
In New York, he shared studio space with Will Howe Foote and Harry Hoffman and summers with them at Old Lyme, and eventually these three artists and their families moved to Old Lyme.
In New York he had studied with Joseph De Camp at the Art Students League, and at Old Lyme was much influenced by Willard Metcalf and Walter Griffin. He married Pauline Bancroft of Wilmington, Delaware, and they traveled extensively in Italy from 1910 to 1912. In 1915, they purchased a home in Old Lyme, and lived there for the next forty years. He also painted at Monhegan Island, Maine, Vermont, and Bermuda.
In 1927, Chadwick's first one-man show was hosted by The Telfair Academy in Savannah, Georgia, and in 1963, a memorial show of his work was held in Old Lyme.

|Born in England, William Chadwick moved with his parents to Holyoke, Massachusetts, in 1882. After graduating from high school, he moved to New York City and enrolled in the Art Student"s League, studying with John H. Twachtman, George Bridgman, and Joseph DeCamp. In 1901, he traveled to Europe, and although little is known about Chadwick's trip, one can assume that he pursued art study while he was abroad.|
The following year, Chadwick made his first visit to Old Lyme, Connecticut, where he became affiliated with the Impressionist art colony centered at Florence Griswold's home. For the rest of the artist's career, he returned to the picturesque town, eventually purchasing a home there in 1915.
At Old Lyme, Chadwick absorbed the tenets of Impressionism, and his
landscapes exhibit that style's high-keyed palette and broken brushstroke, although Chadwick's Impressionism is marked for its subtler handling. At the same time, he continued to paint figurative works in the conservative style of his teacher, DeCamp.
Chadwick held teaching positions at the Teachers College of Columbia
University and the City College of New York.

|William Chadwick was born in Yorkshire, England in 1879. However in 1882, his father, a wool manufacturer, relocated the family to Massachusetts. Chadwick displayed an early aptitude for art, and after graduating from high school he moved to New York to pursue an artistic career. He enrolled at the Art Students League to study with John H. Twachtman, Kenyon Cox, and William Merritt Chase. |
In the summer of 1902, Chadwick made his first visit to the Old Lyme Art Colony located on the coast of Connecticut. Due to its proximity to New York, the village of Old Lyme became a favorite retreat for American artists, including the well-known Impressionist, Childe Hassam. The colony soon became a gathering point for American Impressionists and a popular destination for landscape artists. Over the next seven years Chadwick divided his time between Old Lyme in the summer months and New York during the academic year where he served as the treasurer for the Art Students League. Following his marriage, Chadwick bought a home near the shore in Old Lyme which became his permanent residence in 1915.
From 1924-26 Chadwick taught at the Telfair Academy in Savannah, Georgia and resided in the city during the school terms. By the time Chadwick was teaching in Savannah, he was working in a distinctive Impressionist style with an emphasis on the effects of light. The painterly, loose brushwork is indicative of a painting done en plein aire, in which rapid execution is essential to capturing fleeting atmospheric effects.
The works within this collection are from this period and each incorporate a light, sunny color palette and showcase genre scenes of city and country life. Chadwick was one of several northern artists that spent time in Savannah between the late twenties and early forties, and the city welcomed this artistic flowering. The Savannah Art Club actively sought out artists to act as instructors for the new school at the Telfair, attracting Chadwick and Eliot Clark. Other painters, such as Alexander Brook and Andrée Ruellan, arrived in Savannah a decade later and established a small art colony along the Riverfront which they used as a winter retreat. Whatever the circumstances, once they arrived the artists were inspired by Savannah’s historic architecture and picturesque parks, as well as by the untamed natural beauty of the surrounding marshlands. In 1927, the Telfair Academy honored Chadwick by hosting the first, and only, solo exhibition of his career.

Having established a successful manufacturing business of woolen fabrics in England, Day Chadwick relocated his factory to Holyoke, Massachusetts, in 1882, to take advantage of the growing American market and to circumvent high import tariffs. |
William Chadwick attended local elementary schools and demonstrated a talent for art throughout his adolescence. Shortly after his high school graduation, he moved to New York, where he enrolled in the Art Students League. In the fall of 1898, he entered the Antique class of John H. Twachtman. His other teachers were George B. Bridgman, Kenyon Cox, H. Siddons Mowbray, and he also painted under the guidance of Bryson Burroughs and Joseph R. DeCamp.
During the summer of 1901, William sailed to Europe. His itinerary is unknown, but eventually he went to Rome, where he studied architecture and visited museums. Extant works from this time reveal a broad, simple style with no trace of impressionism.
Chadwick returned to the Art Students League for the 1901-02 winter term. That spring, he went to Old Lyme, Connecticut and took quarters at the Florence Griswold House. Old Lyme was about to become a colony of American impressionists. However, most of the work completed by Chadwick that summer was reflected of the lingering tonalist style. In the spring of 1903 he showed at the Society of American Artists, his debut as a professional artist, and he became treasurer of the Art Students League. In New York, Chadwick shared his studio-residence with Harry Hoffman and Will Howe Foote, and spent summers in Old Lyme.
By the spring of 1907, Chadwick was confident enough of his work to submit two paintings to the National Academy of Design annual and a year later he showed his work for the first time at the annual of the Pennsylvania Academy, and for a time he exhibited regularly at various venues. The Salmagundi Club was the only organization that Chadwick was interested in joining. Later in Rome, he worked with Colin Campbell Cooper, and he began painting more plein-air impressionist landscapes than figurative and genre subjects. Back in Paris in the spring of 1914, Chadwick spent time with Alson Skinner Clark, Robert Vonnoh, Frederick Frieseke, and others, most of whom were American.
During that time, Chadwick was somewhat influenced by Frieseke’s color, but he retained his own conservative style. The advent of war forced the Chadwicks to go to London in the fall of 1914 and then to St. Ives, Cornwall. There the artist found Guy Wiggins, Henry B. Snell, and several other American friends. Then back in Old Lyme, Chadwick executed striking examples of American impressionism during the next decade. In the 1924/25 and 25/26 seasons, Chadwick taught at the Savannah Art School. His one-man show at Telfair Academy was praised by the press.
Chadwick continued his work in Old Lyme, other parts of New England, and Florida, then he died at age eighty-three in Old Lyme.
