Biography from AskART:
| A painter, muralist and drawing specialist in realist, classical styles, James Daniel lives in North Carolina where he had a seven-year apprenticeship with Ben Long, who had been a student of the Italian artist Pietro Annigoni. Daniel also studied with other classically trained artists including Jeffrey Mims, Paul Ingbretson, Charles Cecil and Romano Stefanelli.
To begin a painting, Daniel does preliminary drawing, first using a calligraphy marker on slick paper to do quick sketching and then does a more detailed drawing. He says: "The drawing is an essential part of how I plan a painting, but it doesn't have to be completely resolved before I begin working with oils".
In addition to much figurative and portrait work, Daniel has fresco commissions including "Communion of the Saints" for St. Eugene's Roman Catholic Church in Asheville, North Carolina". He also paints still lifes, which he finds less time consuming and satisfying because he can "resolve the images quickly."
James Daniel also does occasional teaching at drawing and painting workshops, but his preference is to take on apprentices, which he thinks is a more effective way of sharing his knowledge and skills.
