An American expatriate to Italy, James Freeman was born in New Brunswick, Canada, spent his childhood in Otsego County, New York, and lived most of his art career years in Rome. He became known for the skill of his portrait and sentimental genre paintings, especially street urchins in Italy.
In 1828, he enrolled in the Antiques Class at the National Academy of Design in New York City; his enrollment listed him as "Painter", indicating he already had some reputation as an artist. He (showing 500 of 1532 characters). |
