This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Los Angeles, CA on Aug. 11, 1910. Gorham grew up on a ranch in Ojai, CA. He received his degree in art at UC Berkeley where he was a pupil of Chiura Obata. He moved to Santa Barbara in the 1930s to establish an advertising agency with his wife, Marie. His art career was interrupted by WWII when he served in the Navy. After the war he returned to Santa Barbara where he served two terms as president of the local art association and was a founding member of the Santa Barbara Art Institute. He illustrated several books, one of which, On Santa Cruz Island, received the Western Book Award of 1968. Gorham was an active member of the Santa Barbara art community until his demise at his home in Goleta on Dec. 19, 1985. Noted for his fine draftsmanship, drawings of the human figure, and Sierra landscapes, his art has been described as "lyrically representational, leaning toward Oriental simplicity." Exh: GGIE, 1939 (San Francisco Bay).
