A native of  Spain, Gonzalez is well-known as an illustrator and comic artist around the world.

Born in 1939 (or 1941), he began his artistic career doing illustrations, including book illustrations until the mid-fifties, when he was introduced to the comic book business, supposedly by Josep Toutain, who had seen some of his posters in a shop.

His first big professional job was the French western comic Doc Holliday.  However, he felt no affinity toward westerns and subsequently illustrated romantic comics like Rosas Blancas in Spain, and Valentine, Marylin and Roxi, in England.  He did a comic version of the English 1960s TV series The Avengers and then found major recognition with his depiction of the strong, erotic female figure.

Gonzalez is the creator of many inside covers and content pages of the U.S. horror comic series Vampirella.

Jose "Pepe" Gonzales did his first published work for U.K. based Fleetway Publishers, where he illustrated for magazines Valentine, Blue Jeans and other romance publications.

José Gonzalez became a legend in the American comic book market, winning praise from both fans and his artistic peers for his work with Warren Publishing.

Illustrator Frank Frazetta said that no one drew women as beautifully as José Gonzalez.  During his time with Warren, Pepe Gonzalez created six Vampirella magazine covers, and numerous Vampirella stories and merchandizing illustrations, including his famous Vampirella door poster.

After Warren, Gonzalez returned to Barcelona and continued his artistic pursuit of the mastery of the human form, working in pencil, charcoal and oil until his death in 2009.

In half a century as a painter he has been widely exhibited throughout Spain, and is considered a Spanish "national treasure".
