This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Robert Higgs of Joplin, MO was one of the most versatile artists in the Ozarks. He studied art in Kansas City and later at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. It was at the latter institution that he met Ruty Van Schyle Fort, who influenced him in watercolor. He studied also with Bruce Goff, Elliott O'Hara, Doel Reed, Fred Conway and Edgar Whitney. World War II sent him to the South Pacific and Japan, where a selection of his work was included in a volume of 85 prints, published and distributed by the U S Army.

He became Art Director of the Joplin Printing Company. He held one man shows in Santa Fe, New Mexico; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Springfield, Kansas City, and Joplin, Missouri; Pittsburg and Wichita, Kansas. His experience also included instructing a class of oils and watercolors at the Spiva Art Center. His work appeared in Ford Times Magazine and other publications, and his decorative panels brighten a portion of the IBM Corporation in New York City.

This biography was submitted April, 2004 by a researcher at the Ashworth Collection of Native American and Western Art. Material for this biography was taken from a brochure of the artist that accompanied one of his paintings.
