Thomas Joseph was born in Saint Louis, Missouri in 1947 and attended elementary school in Fukuoka, Japan. As the son of a military surgeon he traveled extensively throughout the Orient and the United States. During high school he worked as an illustrator and field assistant with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and the Army Institute of Research on Chincoteague Island, Virginia. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Painting and English from the University of Colorado. He received the Master of Fine Arts Degree in Painting and Art History from Southern Illinois University in 1974.

That year four crates of his paintings were mistakenly shipped to the West Coast. Responding to what apparently was the hand of fate, he located the crates in San Francisco, moved west and began teaching in the Bay Area. From 1976-1979 he served as an art consultant and resident artist with the Erikson Art Studio, an experimental and highly successful art program serving the psychiatric unit of Mount Zion Hospital in San Francisco. During this period he produced a suite of burlesque serigraphs and whimsical paintings that dealt with the human condition, before the appearance of the Zeitgeist movement in the early eighties. His two year residency at the Marin Headlands Center for the Arts allowed extreme exposure to coastal flora, fauna, and natural forces all elements in current work.

Now working from an isolated farm in Illinois, Thomas Joseph paints timeless images of life forms alive in natural life. His work has evolved to rely on the manipulation of paint to reveal a Zen-like awareness of life forms using color, form, and textures.
