Guy Kakarook is one of the most noted Eskimo artists of the late 19th century. Originally from the village of Atnuk, near Golovin, Alaska, he is recognized for his engraved ivory, as well as his drawings in watercolor, ink, and crayon on paper. Kakarook was one of the few carvers who signed their engraved ivory, as most carvers are unidentified.
Sheldon Jackson, a Presbyterian missionary and the education agent for Alaska at the turn of the century, acquired two notebooks including over 3 (showing 500 of 862 characters). |
