Born in Austin, Texas, Joseph Lane studied at the Art Institute of Chicago under Frederick Milton Grant and Laura Van Pappelendam. Lane was alternately a resident of Houston and Chicago in the 1930s and early 1940s. His murals reportedly could be found in several commercial establishments in Chicago.
