Tom E. Lewis (1909-1979)...

Born: Los Angeles, CA
Studied: University of Southern California
Member: California Water Color Society, San Francisco Art Association.

Tom E. Lewis was raised in Pasadena, and became interested in watercolor painting while studying architecture. During the late 1920s, he developed a unique style of painting with watercolors and in 1931, became a member of the California Water Color Society. Throughout the 1930s, he lived in Laguna Beach and was an active member of the art colony there. He also exhibited his watercolors regularly in Northern California museum shows, receiving several major awards and favorable reviews. After 1950, Lewis lived in the San Francisco area and continued to produce fine art paintings.

Born in Los Angeles, CA on Feb. 22, 1909. Lewis studied architecture at USC. During the 1930s he had a home at 2260 Midlothian Drive in Pasadena and a studio in Laguna Beach. A self-taught artist, he worked in oil and watercolor and was partial to the color blue. In 1935 he moved to San Francisco and established a studio on Telegraph Hill. He died there on Aug. 2, 1979. Member: Calif. Art Club; San Diego FA Society; Calif. WC Society; Laguna Beach AA; Progressive Painters of So. Calif. (cofounder). Exh: LA Co. Fair, 1931; San Diego FA Gallery, 1932 (prize); Ebell Salon (LA), 1934, 1935 (1st prize); Santa Cruz Art League, 1934; San Diego Art Guild, 1934 (1st prize); Calif. WC Society, 1934, 1936 (1st prizes); LACMA, 1934, 1935 (1st prizes); Oakland Art Gallery, 1935 (prize); SFMA, 1935; SFAA, 1937; Calif. State Fair, 1937; Meet the Artists, De Young Museum, 1943. In: Oakland Museum; CPLH; LACMA; Santa Barbara Museum; Placerville and Hayward Post Offices; SFMA. AAA 1933; WWAA 1936-41; SF Chronicle, 8-8-1979 (obit).
