Arthur H. Morris 1891-1979: Landscape Painter and Portraitist

As a young boy, Arthur Morris showed an aptitude for drawing and received lessons in watercolor painting. When he was fourteen he studied drawing at the Emma Willard School of Art in Troy, New York for two years.

He was inducted into the army during WW I and served in the Medical Corps. After his discharge he received a government scholarship to the New York School of Fine and Applied Art. He studied there for two years, and then transferred to the Society of Illustrators’ School for Veterans for two more years. He also studied at the Grand Central School of Art under Harvey Dunn, the well-known illustrator.

Mr. Morris then worked as a commercial artist in New York City for various engravers, printers, advertising agencies and for Outdoor Advertising. He continued painting in his studio at home. He then was hired by Republic Aviation on Long Island to form, train, and supervise a group of artists to convert blueprints of new developments into technical illustrations. He held this position for 15 years, until his retirement.

After retirement, he devoted himself entirely to fine art, painting in watercolor, oils, and acrylics. He exhibited in many art shows on Long Island and later in Connecticut over his lifetime. His landscapes and portraits were exhibited and won awards in several venues. He was a member of the Kent Art Association and life member of the Art League of Nassau County and Malvern Artists on Long Island. He won awards in watercolor landscapes and in portraiture, and his paintings hang in homes across the country and in Canada.

Arthur H. Morris died at the age of eighty-eight, in Connecticut and had continued painting until his death.
