Biography from William Lester Gallery:
Carolyn Meyer is inspired by her daily navigation through Bay Area traffic during her commute to work each morning.  Like many people, she rises at 5:30 Monday through Friday to leave on time for an hour-long drive.  As her car crawls along Highway 101, she watches day break against the approaching San Francisco skyline.  The freshness of a new day in combination with the bustling energy of the city inspires her work.

In the studio, Meyer uses photographs that she has impulsively shot from her car window and works to recreate the scenery of her daily commute.  She places the photographs on the opposite side of the room for vague reference about compositional details such as the position of light posts along a bridge.  She is not concerned with realism, but rather with conveying the emotional rush she experiences watching morning light rise over the modern expanse of the Bay Area.

Her toothsome paint application reveals her commitment to the combination of traditional techniques with modern subject matter, painting freeways and road signs in the thick impasto of the Old Masters.

Carolyn Meyer is a professor at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where she earned both her BFA and her MFA.

Biography from Wendt Gallery:
Carolyn Meyer, MFA, a California native now living in Marin County, paints the landscape of the North Bay with a brilliant use of color, shadow and light. She is considered one of the Bay Area's premiere colorists and plein- air painters.

Meyer's interpretation of a landscape, using bold strokes and an overall loose feel, allows her to capture the essence of a place with realism. Although her work shows the influence of 19th-century sensibilities of European and Early California Impressionism, she is often compared with the Society of Six, a group of artists known for plein-air painting in the Bay Area in the 20s and 30s.

She teaches at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where she is also Director of Galleries and Assistant Director of Fine Art Painting.

After high school, Meyer went directly to Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. The terrain and climate change was a relief from the scorching desert. Trips to the Grand Canyon and skiing in the winter were highlights, however soon she was in San Francisco at the Academy of Art College where she has earned both BFA and MFA degrees.
