Frank Mason died on June 17, 2009 at the age of 88.

Biography from Wendt Gallery:
Frank Herbert Mason was born in Cleveland in 1921.  The family, which included another son, Walter, moved to New York City in 1932.  By now, young Mason’s talent as an artist had already become apparent to his family.  In New York, he was apprenticed to study with the painter Manuel Rayes at the age of 12, and when Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia was selected promising young students for his experimental new Music and Arts High School, Mason was chosen to be included in the school’s first class.  Night classes at the National Academy of Design rounded out his activities.

At the age of 16, Mason was granted a scholarship to attend the Art Students League of New York, studying under the well known classicist Frank Vincent Dumond.  At the League, for the first time, Mason found himself painting full time.  Dumond’s style of instruction was the venerable method of demonstration and example, a method which meshed perfectly with Mason’s thirst to master the technique rather than the theory of painting.  He found in Dumond a revered teacher, a mentor, and finally a friend, as he continued to study with him until the latter’s death in 1951.
