This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Richard Miles was born in Ogden, Utah, March 28th, 1938.  He began painting in oils at the age of ten, and has continued ever since.  Upon graduation from Utah State University, Logan, in 1961, Miles accepted a commission in the United States Army.  Retiring as a colonel in 1986, he began a second career as a landscape and wildlife painter.

Of his work Miles states: "I have always enjoyed visual arts, whether it be observing or creating.  I love nature and the scenic beauty of the mountain West.  I have been particularly influenced by the old Dutch and Flemish masters.  I work almost exclusively with oils because I love the texture, brilliance, workability, and permanence of this medium. I try in some small measure to capture a portion of the strength and magnificence of that landscape with which I am intimately familiar.  I want the viewer of my paintings to experience strong feelings - that of the power of nature, peace, tranquility, awe, or past memories."
