Born in Bessemer, Alabama to Edith and John Burbage, David Sinclair Nixon assumed the last name Nixon from his mother's second husband. He lived and worked as an artist and musician (violinist) in Paris where he formed friendships with Ezra Pound, Lyle Saxon, and many other notable art-world figures. He was also accomplished in puppetry.

He returned to New Orleans due to the outbreak of WWII. In the 1940's he opened the Little Gallery on Royal Stre (showing 500 of 1785 characters).
