This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following, submitted May 2004, is from the artist:
Michael Shane Neal, a Nashville native has been painting commissioned portraits since 1990. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from David Lipscomb University and continued his studies at the Santa Fe Institute of Fine Arts, the Scottsdale School of Art, and the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Neal is currently under the tutelage of presidential portraitist Everett Raymond Kinstler.
Neal received the Grand Prize award for his portrait of Dr. John Flanagan at the 2001 Portrait Society of America's International Portrait Competition. The winning portrait was selected from six hundred entries with more than a dozen countries represented worldwide. Neal's work is included in private, corporate, and institutional collections throughout the country. He was recently honored by receiving the commission to paint Senator Arthur Vandenburg for the United States Capitol for permanent installation in the Senate Reception Room in Washington, DC. It is the first such portrait to be included in the collection in nearly 50 years.
Other recent portraits include former Secretary of the Navy and presidential advisor Paul Nitze for Johns Hopkins University; former Secretary of State Christian Herter for Johns Hopkins University; Judge Edward Becker, Chief Justice 3rd Court of Appeals for Yale University Law School.
Neal's work includes still life, landscape, and genre paintings, but the main focus of his work is in portraiture. His paintings are executed in oil on canvas in an impasto or painterly style. By combining both bold brushwork and clarity of color he aims to create a sense of realism in his work.
Neal is an Exhibiting Artist Member of the National Arts Club of New York City, the Allied Artists of America, the Artist Fellowship of New York, the Portrait Society of America, and the Cumberland Society of Painters.
