This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following is submitted by Diana K Gibson:

Born on July 9, 1951, in Wycoff, New Jersey, John Phillip Osborne started painting at the age of 20. Osborne is both a teacher and painter of the American landscape "en plein aire." Placing an emphasis on how objects in nature are seen in various degrees of sunlight, Osborne works with oil paint to achieve light and shadow effects as they are seen in New Jersey, New England, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, and in Europe. His paintings are intended to convey a direct study of the natural environment in all its mysterious, atmospheric moods.

Osborne's awards include include Best in Show at the Hudson Valley Art Association and a Gold Medal of Honor, along with Best of Light and Atmospheric Effects' awards. Osborne was the recipient of the Hudson Valley Art Association's highest honor, Artist in Special Tribute. The Bergen Museum of Art and Science honored Osborne as an inaugural inductee of the Mastadon Artists Society.

His paintings have been exhibited at the American Embassies in Moscow, Africa, Indonesia and South America, and locally at the Bergen Museum of Art and Science.

Osborne's teaching techniques have been featured in "American Artist" and "Palette Talk." He received the first American Art Achievement Award for Teacher of Oil Painting, and under his guidance high school, college, and professional painters have learned to paint in oils.

Osborne is a senior instructor at the Ridgewood Art Institute in New Jersey, and he teaches landscape, seascape, still life and portraiture year round.

He is listed in the "Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in the East", and he is on the Board of Trustees for the Ridgewood Art Institute. He graduated Cum Laude from the Pratt Institute in New York with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a teaching certificate, and studied with Alban Albert and Arthur Maynard of New Jersey.
John P. Osborne is a noted art instructor and impressionist painter known for his interpretation of natural light. Born in 1951 in Wycoff, New Jersey, Osborne began painting in 1969 and graduated cum laude from Pratt Institute in New York City. Studying masters such as George Inness, John Constable and the French Barbizon painters gave him a foundation for landscape painting.

Osborne says he wants "to recreate life on canvas.I arrange the colors of my palette prismatically and strive to get the prism under control with the subtle atmospheric progression of colors and values."

Awards include Best in Show, Hudson Valley Art Association, NY; Gold Medal of Honor, American Artists Professional League, NJ; First Place at the Kent Art Association, Ridgewood Art Institute and the N.J. Grand Exposition; Best Light & Atmospheric Effect Award (Dumond Award), Hudson Valley Art Association, the American Artists Professional League, NYC, Ridgewood Art Institute, NJ; Landscape Awards at Salmagundi Club, NYC, Knickerbocker Artists, NYC, etc.
