This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Painter and illustrator, James Moore Preston was born in 1873. He studied with Thomas Anshutz at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, in Philadelphia. James Preston and his artist wife, Mary Wilson Preston, were both associated with Robert Henri and the Ashcan School of painters. James Preston was particularly close to William Glackens. Around 1910 or 1911, Henri included both Prestons, as well as George Bellows, in an exhibition of the Eight (Ashcan School) he arranged in New York City at the Union Club. Although he was connected with the artists of the Ashcan Group, he painted landscapes in the Post-Impressionist style with soft and subtle colors.

The Prestons also exhibited in the famous Armory Show, 1913, in New York City. James Preston was a member of the Guild of Free Lance Artists (established in 1920), in New York City. The couple lived in New York City and often traveled to Paris.

Preston produced a cover for Saturday Evening Post (April 1905) but became more active in illustration during the 1920s.

(May Wilson Preston was also born in 1873, in New York. She studied at Oberlin Art School, in Ohio, and was influenced by John Sloan and Robert Henri at the Art Students League, in New York City. When she was denied admittance in a life drawing class, May Wilson Preston became involved in the struggle for women's rights. She was active in the National Woman's Party and contributed to Women Voter. She also illustrated the book, How it Feels to be the Husband of a Suffragette.)

May Wilson Preston died in 1949 and James Preston died in 1962.
