James Raymond Perry was born in Northfield, Massachusetts on April 20, 1863. A self-taught artist, Perry appears to have spent most of his career in Chicago. His landscapes often include cattle and other animals. As well as a painter, he also wrote short stories for Scribner magazine and Century Illustrated Monthly. Landscapes by him of Marin County, California are extant. He died in Winnetka, Illinois on May 10, 1969.
