Short Biography of Philip Paval taken from the flysheet of his autobiography 'Paval Autobiography of a Hollywood Artist' (Gunther Press 1968 (Library of Congress Catalog No. 68-57212))

'Philip Paval was born in Denmark, educated as a Gold and Silversmith and graduated from the Technical School of Art. He settled in Hollywood where he maintains a studio a gathering place of artists, bohemians, actors and writers.

Paval has contributed much to the development in the field of art. He is Past President of the California Art Club, Scandinavian Art Society, American Institute of Fine Arts, and is a member of the Museum Association.'

'Paval is a prolific artist. His work is in seventeen museums in the USA, Denmark, England France, Germany, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Vatican, Rome, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Ecuador, Austria, New Zealand and Australia. He has exhibited in many exhibitions and won many prizes, citations for his work. His work is also represented in many private collections.'

'Paval has made Silver Medals of such famous people as President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, King Frederik IX of Denmark, President Kennedy, Hans Christian Andersen, Pope John XXIII, in the Vatican, Rome, Charles Coburn, Princess Margrethe of Denmark, Carl Sandburg, Lincoln, Pablo Picasso, Dalzell Hatfield and many others.'

'Also, portraits of Walter Hampton as Cerrano de Bergerac, Carl Brisson as de Artagan, in the Danish Royal Theatre Museum, Denmark, Charles Coburn, Eroll Flynn, John Barrymore, John Decker, Jean Hersholt, Governor Cuthbert Olson of California, Jose Drudis-Biada, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton as Hamlet, Florence Crosby, Selene Walters, Gene Fowler, Ernest Hemingway and Mrs. Kenneth Hansen '

Paval is listed in Who's Who in California, Who's Who in American Art, World Biography, Member of Honor of Academic National of France, Fellow in the British Museum Royal Coin Numismatic Society, Academic Adriatic, Milano, Italy.

In 1945 King Umberto honored him with the La Corona De Italia. President Ramon of Panama presented him with the Commander Cross of Vasco Nunes de Balboa; Medai'le d'honneur du Merite Francaise, France; Palme d'Or France, Officer de Saint George, Belgium; Cross of Academic Honor, International Academy, Washington, D.C.; El Atenero Nationale de Ciencies Y Artes de Mexico, by President Portes Gill; Sociadade Braziera de Bella Artes, Brazil, S.A., and many others.'

The following information is from a dealer who sold me a painting :
Philip Paval 1899-1971, Born in Nykobing, Denmark (Date and place of birth verified from his autobiography). After immigrating to America in 1919 (again verified in the book), he worked as a merchant seaman in New York. During the 1920's he moved to Los Angeles where he established a silversmiths shop. Paval became well known in LA for his silver and gold sculptures as well as his portraits of Hollywood celebrities. Works held LACMA; MM; Wichita AA; Newark Museum; Pasadena Art Institute; Buckingham Palace, London and many others.

Born in Nykobing, Denmark on April 20, 1899. As a teenager Paval was apprenticed to a silversmith and studied art in Denmark. After immigrating to America in 1919, he worked as a merchant seaman in New York. During the 1920s he moved to Los Angeles where he established a silversmith shop. Paval became well known in Los Angeles for his silver and gold sculptures as well as portraits in oil of Hollywood celebrities. He exhibited and won many prizes internationally before his death in Los Angeles on March 1, 1971. Exh: LA Co. Fairs, 1934-39 (prizes); Hollywood Public Library, 1934; LACMA, 1935, 1940, 1955 (prizes); Painters & Sculptors of LA, 1936 (prize); Riviera Gallery (Hollywood), 1936 (prize); SFAA, 1937; Scandanavian-American Art Society (LA), 1939-40; Ebell Club (LA), 1940, 1950 (prize); Calif.
