This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Robert Peterson (1943-2011)

He was born in 1943 in Chicago, Illinois and died in February of 2011.  He began drawing as a child with rheumatic fever when he was confined to a hospital bed. When he was eight years old, he moved with his family to Albuquerque, New Mexico. He spent much time in school drawing because his hearing was diminishing. His parents enrolled him in the New Mexico School for the Deaf in Santa Fe and later he attended Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C. before returning to Albuquerque in the late 1960s.

By 1970 he had become a full-time artist. He began painting still lifes of industrial objects in oils; then he switched to pastels. He always paints from life, using everyday objects and food in highly detailed still lifes. His wife, Reyna, is also deaf and they communicate with sign language. With others he communicates by writing or through a teletype operator on the telephone.

Peterson had a longtime interest in Eastern religion, philosophy and culture. He and Reyna have traveled to Tibet, Nepal and other parts of Asia.

Biography from Jerald Melberg Gallery:
Self-taught as an artist, Illinois native Robert Peterson uses his bare fingers to deftly apply pastel to paper, slowly creating seemingly solid fruits, vegetables and other simple organic forms.  These minimal arrangements are intimate yet monumental and possess a mysteriously perceptible air of silence.

In doing so they transcend photo-realism to create an emotional response to their shape, texture and existence.  The pastels evoke every sense as the inanimate objects spring to life upon the paper.

Since his first exhibition in 1969, Peterson has been honored with well over 100 gallery and museum exhibitions across the United States.  He is currently represented in numerous public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, the Knoxville Museum of Art and the Mint Museum in Charlotte.
