This biography from the Archives of AskART:
South Carolina native Brian Rutenberg now makes his home in New York City. He attended the School of Visual Arts in New york City where he met Neo-expressionist painter Gregory Amenoff. He took as job as Amenoff's assistant which led to meeting sculptor and collector John Raimondi. Raimondi began collecting Rutenberg's paintings and placing other in public and private collections.

Rutenberg paints nature, especially images from the landscape of his childhood, in an expressionist style.

Rutenberg was awarded a Basil Alkazzi Award in 1992 and a Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Studio Grant in 1993. In 1997 he he won a Fulbright Scholarship to Ireland as well as a Artists' Work Program Grant at the Irish Museum of Modern Art. In 2000 he received a Peter S. Reed Grant.

Brian Rutenberg is known for atmospheric landscape painting done with the impasto technique. A South Carolinian now residing in New York City, Rutenberg traces his inspiration back to his fascination with the unique quality of light found on the Lowcountry coast.

He says:  "Especially inspiring is that point when the land meets the water and, for a moment, the two become blurred.  Brian Rutenberg earned a B.F.A. from the College of Charleston in South Carolina and a M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Rutenberg’s work has been represented in over eighty museum and gallery exhibitions across the United States and abroad, including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the Vancouver Museum and the Butler Institute of American Art.
