This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A watercolor painter, author and teacher, Rankin paints realistic subjects with a focus on scenes in India, animals, and landscapes in the U.S. and abroad. He has traveled all over India and used to live all summer in Kashmir until the political trouble between India and Pakistan escalated.  He has been traveling in India regularly since 1970, speaks a little Hindi, and is a life long practitioner of Yoga ( he was co-founder of the American Yoga Association and is an author of books on the subject).

In 1985 he began a major ongoing artistic project to paint India's diversity of wildlife beginning with her birds, especially her magnificent storks and cranes.  This led to his painting of tigers and other wild cats in their natural habitats.  To this end, he and his wife Deanna have traveled extensively throughout India on a regular basis studying all of India's wildlife.

David James Rankin was born in 1945 and graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art.  He is a member of the National Academy of Professional Plein Air Painters; The Society of Animal Artists; and the Ohio Watercolor Society.

He teaches watercolor painting and has written instructional books and articles on the subject, most notably Fast Sketching Techniques, published by North Light Books in 2000.
