This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Gaston Rebry (1933 – 2007)

Gaston Rebry (1) was a Canadian landscape painter.

He was born in Wevelgem, (Flanders) Belgium.  In 1954 he emigrated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  His home for most of the rest of his life (since c.1956) was Saint Boniface, Quebec a town about 75 miles north east of Montreal.  He died about 6 miles west of there in St-Elie-de-Caxton.

His primary medium was oil paint.  His primary subject was the landscape (forests, rivers, lakes, and snowscapes) of the region where he lived in southern Quebec.  However, he also painted portraits, village scenes, still life and genre.  His style was Fauvism*. AskART have some excellent illustrations of his work.

His art education includes the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Menin, Belgium (1952 – 1953); and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Montreal (1954 – 1955) (2).

About ten years after graduation, Rebry turned to painting full time. His works have been exhibited in prestigious commercial galleries such as Loch Gallery, Winnipeg; Alex Fraser Galleries, Vancouver; Kaspar Gallery, Toronto; and the West End Gallery, Edmonton.

Rebry’s paintings are frequently traded on the Canadian auction market; and they are in many private collections as well as the permanent collection of Musée Pierre-Boucher (Pierre Boucher Museum), Trois-Rivières, Quebec.

Footnotes:

(1) He is the namesake of his father (1905 – 1953) the famous Tour de France cyclist.

(2) The biography posted by Pacific Gallery, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan says, Rebry’s teacher at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Montreal was Jean-Gerald Bertrand (1929); it is the only source with that information.  According to A Dictionary of Canadian Artists (1974), by Colin S. MacDonald – Bertrand taught at the school but he started there in 1956, a year after most sources say Rebry left it.
