Biography from AskART:
| Michael Rakowitz earned a masters of science degree in visual studies from MIT in 1998.
Also in 1998 Michael Rakowitz started "paraSITE" a project which produced and distributed portable dwellings made of plastic trashbags and packaging tape. The tents which are used by the homeless in winter attach to building vents and like a parasite, exploit the energy of the host.
In 2002 Rakowitz was awarded the top prize for his inventive design in project "ParaSITE" in a competition co-organized by UNESCO and the Felissimo Design House.
In 2004 he produced "Test Ballot: Examining the Faulty Machinery of Democracy" which was executed on election day, November 2. Rakowitz brought fifteen old voting machines from Florida, the same brand as those from the contested 2000 election, to multiple locations in Europe and invited the global community to vote.
