Primarily known for his paintings of dogs, Rannells was a champion and a protector of the species.
An Ohio native, he was born in 1892 in Caldwell, and died in 1982 at his home in Westerville. He served for 35 years as Professor of Commercial Art at Ohio State University, retiring in 1961. In 1916 he began painting dogs, rather than girls, and in the 1920s his portraits appeared on the covers of such magazines as Judge, Life, and McCalls.
