This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A painter of American West subjects, Don Stivers is especially focused on the Civil War and events that were critical in the nation's history such as General Lee at Gettysburg, the Union Army returning to Washington after the victory at Appomattox, and the last cavalry charge with horses by the 11th U.S. Cavalry.

Stivers grew up in Superior, Wisconsin, and took art training at the California College of Arts and Crafts after serving in World War II as a Navy corpsman.   He had a 15-year career as a commercial artist on the West Coast and then moved East, where he had magazine commissions from Reader's Digest and Field and Stream, and book cover work for  the All Creatures Great and Small series of James Herriot.  He also did portraiture for Time magazine covers; and among his subjects were John Connally, former governor of Texas; Charles DeGaulle, former Prime Minister of France; and United States Navy Admiral, Elmo Zumwalt.

Following Stivers special interest in American history, he began a series on Civil War subjects, with the assistance of professional historians.  Indicative of his success are commissions of his paintings for sections of the armed forces including the U.S. Command & General Staff College, the Army War College, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

His work is on exhibit at the Pentagon, and in the collections of the U.S. Cavalry Museum, the Fort Bliss Museum, the Headquarters of the 1st Cavalry Division, and the Army War College.
