| FRANK H. SHAPLEIGH (American, 1842-1906):
Frank H. Shapleigh was born in Boston in 1842 and died in Jackson, New Hampshire in 1906. He maintained a Boston studio from 1866-1907 and wintered in St. Augustine, Florida after 1886.
He studied at the Lowell Institute Drawing Schoool in Boston and in Paris with E. Lambinet between 1866 and 1869. In 1876, he became a member of the Boston Art Club. His work is represented in Farnsworth Art Museum, ME; New Britain Museum of Art, CT; Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College; Portland Museum of Art, ME; University of New Hampshire; New Hampshire Historical Society and many more.
Who Was Who in American Art states: “One of the best known artists of New Hampshire’s White Mountains, he had a summer studio there throughout the last quarter of the 19th century, located in the Crawford House, an upscale hotel in Mount Washington Valley and attracted the tourists who were his clientele. Shapleigh also served in the Civil War from 1863 and then established a portrait studio in Boston. After studying in Paris, he shared a studio in Boston with John Appleton Brown and in 1870 painted in Yosemite….He appears to have stopped painting in 1898. He generally indicated the place and date on each of his paintings.” He was a close friend of John J. Enneking and Benjamin Champney and often painted with them en plein aire on location. He is one of the most sought after and popular turn-of-the-century White Mountain painters. |

| A landscape painter and illustrator, Frank Henry Shapleigh was born in Boston. As a young man he studied art at the Lowell Institute, but interrupted his career briefly to join the Union Army in 1863.
After the Civil War Shapleigh studied in Paris (1867-1869) with Emile Lambinet, whose pastoral landscape style strongly influenced his work. Settling in Jackson, New Hampshire, he painted atmospheric landscapes, favoring the White Mountains for his subject matter.
In the 1880s he also illustrated books and magazines. From 1886 until his death in 1906, Shapleigh spent part of each year in his studio at the Ponce De Leon Hotel, Saint Augustine, Florida, during which time he painted these street scenes. |

| Frank Shapleigh is best known for his well-executed White Mountain, New Hampshire landscapes that include all of the major tourist attractions as well as places that had special, personal, meaning for him. He painted Mount Washington and the other well-known mountains from dozens of different locations, and because he wrote the location of his paintings on the back of the canvases, his paintings provide an invaluable record of his works.
He was born in Boston and studied there at the Lowell Institute of Drawing. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the Union Army and served from 1862-63. He then studied art in Paris with Emile Lambinet and then returned to the United States to establish his studio in Boston. In 1866, he first visited the White Mountains, where he spent most of his summers and built a home studio in Jackson.
He also painted in Florida, California, and Europe. From 1877 to 1894 he was artist-in-residence at the Crawford House in St. Augustine, Florida, where he wintered at the Ponce de Leon Hotel.
