Smith taught painting and illustration at Chicago Academy of Fine arts and Newark School of Fine and Applied Art.  He was an Honorary Member of the Chelsea Art Club.
Smith is known for his landscapes, marines, portraits, and still lives.  Portraits include those of Amelia Erhart and Robert Bruce Hall, Bishop of Virginia.  He painted and traveled abroad in England, Scotland, Wales, Belgium, Holland, Germany, France, Italy, and Greece.  During the last ten years of his life he painted modern expressionist and abstract works.

In 1989, 16 of his water color paintings for Motor Boating Magazine (1930's) were exhibited at the P.R. Mallory Gallery at Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Ct.  Several of the paintings were later sold through the Art Gallery at Mystic Seaport Stores.
