This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following is from Gary Stanley of San Diego:

Jeff Daniel Smith, a California native, attended El Camino College and studied art history, drawing, and painting.  In his mid 20's he began working for commercial studios which specialized in the creation of paintings, and murals, for commercial spaces and backdrops for photography and films.

He moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1994 and began plein-air painting.  With six other Peninsula artists (Richmond Woodson, Cyndra Bradford, Johnny Apodaca, Gerard Martin, Mark Farina, and Barry John Raybould) he helped form the now well known artist group, the "Informalists".  In 1998 he became an Artist Member of the Carmel Art Association, and was the Vice President of that organization in 2002-2003. In 2008-2009 Jeff Smith served as the President of the Carmel Art Association.

Smith has exhibited widely in his career.  He has participated in exhibitions at the Carmel Art Association, the Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art (Land & Legacy Exhibit presented by the Big Sur Land Trust, 2002), Galerie Plein Aire, and the Carmel Art Festival (2000-03). He has won Honorable Mention awards at the prestigious Carmel Art Festival in 2000, and 2002.

Biography from Galerie Plein Aire:
Jeff Daniel Smith, a native Californian, was born with a passion for art.  As a child he was constantly drawing, and progressed to frequently winning awards in his high school art shows.

He attended El Camino College where he studied art history, as well as drawing and painting from live models.  His formal art career began in his mid twenties, when he began working for commercial studios that specialized in the creation of paintings and murals for commercial spaces and backdrops for photography and film.

Smith's talent expanded with the experience, allowing him to paint on a large scale, in a wide variety of subjects and styles.  Arriving on the scenically diverse, and beautiful Monterey peninsula in 1994, his artistic inspiration drew him to paint en plein air, and with six other Peninsula artists, formed the Informalists.

In 1998 Jeff was chosen to become a member of the Carmel Art Association, and in 2008-2009 he served as the President of this prestigious Association.

The beauty that is California speaks to Jeff - be it the rolling hills, dotted with oaks and kissed by the sun, or the stateliness of pines reaching for the sky.  Brilliant color and bold brushwork on a plein air study or a large studio piece, translates Jeff’s vision and captures the fleeting light of the Moment.
