A noted author, traveler and artist, John Stephens also played an important role in the development of the Panama Railroad. He made two trips to the Maya region of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula between 1839 and 1842, and his descriptions and drawings of Mayan ruins helped stimulate interest in preservation of the sites. During the first, he explored a handful of "lost" Maya cities, and in 1841, accompanied by artist Frederick Catherwood and the young doctor and amateur ornithologist Samuel Cabot, S (showing 500 of 18481 characters).
