This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| | Known as an abstract photographer, his interest in photography began with a photography course in New York's Ethical Culture School from which he graduated in 1909. He then became a part of the Photo-Secession group promoted by Alfred Stieglitz at Gallery 291 on Fifth Avenue. Another major influence was the 1913 Armory Show which exposed him to European modernism. He began to specialize in sharp focused views of New York City taken from abstract vantage points that revealed pattern and design. He also did numerous character shots, common people in truthful close-ups. |
