This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following information, submitted by Grant Turner, son of the artist, is from the January 2001 obituary of James Thomas Turner.

James Turner was a western-subject sculptor in realist style, who had one-man shows in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Switzerland and the United States.  His work was in the collections of the Richard Nixon White House, John Wayne, Coors Brewery and TriState Industrial Bank.

Born in Denver, Colorado, Turner took the Famous Art Course and studied at the Western Brass and Foundry. He also studied sculpture with Edgar Britton. He has carved wood doors for public buildings.

As a young man, he grew up in Denver, graduating from North High School.  He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, and then for 12 years worked for Mountain Bell Telephone in Denver followed by 15 years with the Denver Fire Department, serving on the crash crew at Stapleton Airport.

Married to Sharrie Turner, he was the father of seven sons, one whom preceded him in death.

The Bronze works of James T Turner seem to burst with energy and sometimes with menace. The Fairplay, Colorado sculptor has worked with wood sculpture-and still does wood-carved doors on occasion-but seems to have found his best medium in dark and massive metal.

Turner was born in Telluride, Colorado in 1933 and attended school in Denver. After 3 1/2 years in the Navy he studied art, working first in wood, then in jewelry and now in bronze.

Married and the father of five sons, Turner does most of work in a log-cabin studio at the back of his Fairplay residence...........
