Born in London, England in 1814, Matthew Wilson became a painter of portraits, especially of miniatures. He emigrated to the United States in 1832 and lived in Philadelphia where he was a student of Henry Inman, but he returned to Europe to study with Edouart Dubufe in Paris in 1835.
In addition to foreign travel, Wilson traveled widely in American including a visit to New Orleans in 1845 where he completed several portrait commissions. He was then commissioned by the legislature of Geor (showing 500 of 1279 characters). |
