James Harvey Young — genre and portrait painter — was born in Salem, MA on June 14, 1830 and died in 1918 while residing in Brookline, MA. In 1848, at the tender age of eighteen, Harvey moved his studio to Boston to establish himself in portraiture. While exhibiting with the Boston Art Club in 1884 and 1893, he listed his address as 12 West Street, Boston, MA.

He painted such notables as actor William Warren in 1867; Dr. Peabody of Exeter Academy; Mrs. John H. Holmes; Horace Mann; Edward Everett; Colonel Thomas Aspinwall; and Reverend F. H. Hedge, D. D.

Young was a member of the Boston Art Club and exhibited with them in 1878, 1884 and 1993. He is represented in the collections of the Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, MA; the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, MA; the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA; the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, OH; the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, CT; the Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, MA; the Newark Museum in Newark, NJ; the Massachusetts State House in Boston, MA; the Malden Public Library in Malden, MA; the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH; the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, TX; and Oberlin College in Oberlin, OH.
