This biography from the Archives of AskART:
William Sheridan Young  (   after 1877)

A painter of landscapes, portraits, and literary subjects, Young was active in Cincinnati from about 1855 to 1870 and again, after a stay in Chicago, from 1874 to 1877.  A native of Cincinnati, he studied in Dusseldorf and specialized in mountainous European and New England scenery.  The artist was a member of the original Cincinnati Sketch Club in 1862 and 1863.

This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Although probably born in Ohio, William Young served in the Kanawha Valley during the Civil War and frequently returned thereafter to paint West Virginia scenes. However, he spent most of his life in Cincinnati and elsewhere.

Only a relatively small number of extant works by Young are currently known. A considerable percentage of these are West Virginia scenes including at least five views of the Cheat River and several more of the Kanawha River. The West Virginia Historical Art Collection contains two Cheat River paintings by the artist as well as a work depicting Autumn on the Kanawha.
