Biography from AskART:
| Although probably born in Ohio, William Young served in the Kanawha Valley during the Civil War and frequently returned thereafter to paint West Virginia scenes. However, he spent most of his life in Cincinnati and elsewhere.
Only a relatively small number of extant works by Young are currently known. A considerable percentage of these are West Virginia scenes including at least five views of the Cheat River and several more of the Kanawha River. The West Virginia Historical Art Collection contains two Cheat River paintings by the artist as well as a work depicting Autumn on the Kanawha. |
